What if...Your Name is Valerie...and Uber Radio

Image
What if your name is Valerie and you hail an Uber ride and as you get in and shut the door, Amy Winehouse's (sorry Mark) version of The Zutton's "Valerie" comes on? You know because Uber has some special deal with Spotify where drivers have access to a premium subscription while on an active drive. Still not impressed? Okay what if your favorite...no scratch that...your most favoritest (favoritestest?) song comes up? You know, because Uber has allowed you create a playlist on its servers that it streams via fairy dust and rainbows to the driver's car speakers. Still not impressed? Okay what if you hear a radio station where up-to-the-minute local whether and traffic conditions (plus breaking news relevant to you in particular) are being read by a Siri-like voice? You know, because magic. Still not impressed? Never fret. The self-driving cars will be ready for deployment in our lifetime. Sheesh. PS. If you look hard enough, you'll find people at...

Quick One: February Fasting

Image
The month of February is frequently chosen for fasting and other try-out resolutions because it is the shortest month (Super Bowl countries are exempt of course). Sorry but I will be eating heartily this month. I will however be giving up something else that starts with "F" for those 28 days. This addictive drug that my body doesn't seem to be able to do without. Facebook! My only treatment plan for the craving will be to actually pick up my phone and call someone...anyone and have some live conversation. So let the jonesing begin.

Chopsticks? Musings of a Warthog.

Cutlery (in whatever shape or form) was invented by humans to differentiate themselves from us animals. There, I said it! Functionally it makes no difference whether you pour the noodles, wholesale, directly into your mouth, or throw your face into the food like us warthogs. You humans like to appear cultured, hence you try to show that you can control your base desires (or at least appear to). Base desire, in this case, would be the desire to throw yourselves at the food and make some passionate...er...'consumation'. Ever noticed how it is more 'cultured' to hold your fork by touching it as little as possilbe? It's almost as if the food is some evil smelling substance to be merely tolerated. To be somewhat fair to you humans, food has really done some evil in it's heyday; but then, that is hardly even the food's fault? I wonder if you humans ever bothered to invent some kind of 'cutlery' for sex...oh wait...you do that in private so there's no ...

Quick One! Waist to Length ratio

Yikes! My waist size is more than my trouser length! I'd better hit the gym...but first, some pizza and ice cream. Yum!

Stop watching those calories!

Image
Watching TV can be likened to consuming calories. Too much of either can be bad for you. Just like there are different kinds of foods, there are different sources of ‘calories’ on TV: ‘Vitamins’: They have little entertainment value (‘calories’) but pack a lot of useful information and/or inspiration (‘nutrients’). In other words, they are good for you. Examples include boring educational programs (as seen on many public freely accessible stations), boring news programs (like some on CSPAN ), boring religious programs, etc. ‘Fruits and Veggies’: They manage to pack in some entertainment value and are very good for you. These include funny educational programs (eg the ‘ For Dummies series’…ok make that educational programs that try to be funny), interesting news programs, engaging religious programs, and exercise videos. ‘Foody Foods’: Since vitamins like to call themselves food, we had to make some kind of distinction. These provide pure entertainment just like food is meant to provid...

Quick One! What is your ‘NO’ No.?

What’s your ‘No’ number? How many times do you have to hear “No” before you give up? Some people have a ‘No’ number of 1; ie they give up trying after hearing “No” for the first time. Others have a ‘No’ number of zero; ie they don’t even bother to ask. A few have been known to have a number of 0 Others yet have ‘No’ numbers that tend towards infinity. They either just don’t understand the word, or have a selective amnesia for it. I suspect such people also tend to be a tad wealthier than the rest. Do you know some people have a ‘No’ number of minus one? Yeah…they hear a ‘No’ even when the response is “YES!”. What’s your ‘No’ number?

Active Givers and Passive Takers

Image
Marriage is a covenant and I believe that, more important than the certificate given by the court house, is the covenant between the couple. I believe this covenant is signified by the biological covenant marker that God created...SEX. I believe God is very particular about covenants to the extent that the virginal bleeding is a blood covenant of sorts, which I believe He takes very seriously. I believe God sees the sexual act as part of marriage so you can't really 'test the waters' without getting married. I also wouldn't be surprised if God saw some other not-so-committal things like living together as part of marriage but let's not belabor that right now. Sex is about giving and taking. I believe God's intent was for the giving to be active and the taking to be passive. Sex is a symbol that represents marriage, which is a symbol that represents the way God expects us to live our lives...without selfishness, taking utmost care of the other person's needs....

Those Darned Calories

I’ll second (or third) that too rapid weight loss is not healthy. Actually history has shown that too rapid anything, more than less, is never healthy. That said, it's good to watch your caloric intake...but it will not be as easy as not eating. A faster healthier way to loose weight is to eat smaller but more regular meals (of course while adding a healthy dose of exercise...or rather, a dose of healthy exercise). Whatever you do, avoid bouts of starvation. Starvation simply tells your body that there isn't enough food to go round (famine even). The body then responds by slowing down the metabolism, and by storing whatever 'little' you ingest as fat…you know, for the ‘rainy’ day ahead. You’re better off boosting your metabolism by eating tiny meals say every 3 hours. What I do (ok try to do) is eat tiny meals and supplement with granola bars (yes I’ve acquired the taste) later, or eat my meals in two meals…half now half later. Avoid or limit the white killer foods like...
