Quick One: On Typecasting

Image
Typecasting must really suck for an actor. And it's a potentially sad result of humans' lazy dispensation towards summary judgements based on appearance and first-impressions. However some other actors dream of being so lucky to even get a role memora ble enough to lead to typecasting. On the less harmful side of typecasting is the notion that you created a character so real that it overshadowed your real self. Jim Parsons will have to work extra hard to not be Sheldon Cooper in the eyes of the public... ...or he could just cash his cheques smiling all the way to the bank knowing his betters could possibly be bussing at coffee shops as I type.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: Quick Spoiler-Free Review

Image
Image Property of Marvel Studios "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 does everything a movie of its budget and scope is expected to do." Hey folks! Look who's back from blogging retirement, though I didn't retire as much as figure out a way to distill my angst into 140 characters or less . Anyhoo, let's see how things go this time around. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 does everything a movie of its budget and scope is expected to do. If you're insistent on a plot-heavy, character-driven thesis on what it means to be human...yada yada yada, then you might want to consider retracing your steps. This movie might not be for you. But if you want a humorous joyride with spectacular visuals and attendant action, you've come to the right place. The previously mentioned things the critics love are there but they won't distract you. Yes, it's less plot-heavy than its predecessor but it's not all fluff. There's enough plot in there to k...

Quick One! Seems God also uses Photoshop

Did anyone see the fog out in Baltimore today? It looked as if God applied a gaussian blur filter to make everything look dreamy and romantic...unless you're driving and it's just poor visibility as far as you're concerned.

What Am I Here For? With Lyrics

Name That Tune!

If, by some freak chance, you remember the instrumental music from the obscure show "Circus Center Ring" (say, for instance, because you grew up in Lagos in the late eighties), you will really appreciate this music list: 1. Feels So Good by Chuck Mangione 2. I Go To Rio by Peter Allen 3. The Hustle by Van McCoy 4. Quando, Quando, Quando by Michael Bublé (or Engelbert Humperdinck, or Pat Boone, or if you really wanna go far, Tony Renis) 5. Main Theme from Star Wars by John Williams 6. and of course, Circus Center Ring's main theme...that is if you can ever find it (I wish I had a prize for whomever is able to remember the lyrics). I'm sure I've missed out one or two so please call me out ASAP if you have 'em.

What is a Photograph?

I have a few questions: 1. when is a photograph really a photograph? 2. is it when it's a true/unaltered representation of what the imaging technology/device originally captured?... 3. ...or is it when it's a true representation of what the human eye agrees to be 'realistic'? 4. if question 2 above is true, will a crisp, colorful 21 megapixel raw file of a beautiful bride with great bokeh be any less of a photograph than a blurry, noisy black and white image gotten from an ancient pin-hole camera? 5. is blending 3 captures (with different points of focus) to simulate a large depth of field really less photography than closing up the aperture (in-camera) to get a larger depth of field? (or the converse...blurring parts of an image to simulate great bokeh as opposed to opening up the shutter) 6. if question 3 is true, shouldn't blending 3 bracketed captures with the aim of nearer approximating human-perceived dynamic range be the goal? 7. if the i...

Everyone close your eyes...seriously!

Image
Ever wondered how to take a group picture where one or more people aren't blinking, or with partially shut (droopy dog) eyes? Or one where people don't have different shapes of mouth movement. For the first problem, I simply ask them to close their eyes. After I've convinced them that I'm serious, i simply tell them to open it and then take the picture immediately. This is because no one blinks immediately after opening their eyes. While I'm at it i also take a picture of everyone with their eyes closed, cos frankly it makes for an intriguing shot. For the second problem (the mouths) I ask them to say the cliched, overused, cheesy word...you guessed it...'cheese'. 'Cheese' was chosen by the sages of old because it contorts the mouth into a smile-like shape. 'Cheese' was also useful in the olden days because it's irrelevance to the event made some laugh. In the end it doesn't matter what word is used as long as it's monosyllabic a...
